Why Wasps Are a Problem in Leicester

Dangerous and Aggressive in the Right Conditions

While wasps play a role in the ecosystem, their nests pose serious risks to people and pets — especially in the warmer months. A single nest can house thousands of aggressive wasps, and disturbing it could lead to multiple stings. For some, this could mean life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

Wasps are highly active in:

  • Lofts and soffits
  • Garden sheds and garages
  • Bushes, trees, and flower beds
  • Wall cavities and under roof tiles
  • Attics and voids near pipework or insulation
  • Eaves, fascia boards, and guttering

Common Wasps & Hornets in the UK

  • Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) – Yellow/black stripes and anchor-shaped face marking
  • German Wasp (Vespula germanica) – Similar to common wasps but with 3 dots on the face
  • Tree Wasp (Dolichovespula sylvestris) – Smaller, nests in trees and underground
  • Saxon Wasp (Dolichovespula saxonica) – Found in the South, increasingly seen in urban areas
  • European Hornet (Vespa crabro) – The largest species in the UK
  • Asian Hornet (Vespa velutina) – Not yet widespread but expected to increase

Wasps are not just a summer nuisance — their seasonal cycle begins in spring when hibernating queens awaken and build initial nests, usually in hidden, sheltered areas.

Wasp Nest Growth Explained

From Ping Pong Ball to Dustbin-Sized Danger

A queen begins by building a small paper-like nest from chewed wood (fences, sheds, trees, batons, fascia boards). In spring, she lays her first 8–12 eggs, raises the larvae, and once the first adult workers hatch, they take over construction and foraging.

Nests can double in size weekly throughout summer. At their peak, they can house thousands of wasps and grow to the size of a beach ball or even a dustbin.

Why Professional Treatment Is Essential

DIY Wasp Control Is Dangerous

Attempting to remove or treat a wasp nest yourself is highly risky. Wasps will defend their nest with aggression, and unlike bees, they can sting multiple times. Our methods ensure:

  • Fast knockdown
  • Safe and discreet access
  • Removal or neutralisation of the nest
  • Follow-up advice to prevent return

Our Wasp Nest Removal Process in Leicester

Step 1: Initial Assessment
We’ll confirm the presence, species, and location of the nest — even if it’s hidden inside walls or roof spaces.
Step 2: Targeted Treatment
Depending on the location, we use:

  • Aerosol or liquid sprays – For visible nests
  • Dust treatment – For hidden or difficult access nests
  • Freeze sprays – Where immediate knockdown is essential

Treatments usually work within 30 minutes to a few hours.
Step 3: Optional Nest Removal
If accessible, we’ll remove the nest. If not, it will naturally disintegrate over time once the wasps have been eradicated.

Environmentally Aware Pest Control

Wasps can be aggressive, but they also contribute to controlling pests and pollinating plants. That’s why we take a responsible approach to pest control.

We do not treat bees (honey bees or bumblebees), due to their critical role in pollination and their declining numbers. If you’ve mistakenly identified bees as wasps, we’ll advise and refer you to a specialist rehoming service.

Excellent Service. I have used them twice once in 2021 and again this week for a different area. They treated the wasp problem, were very prompt and said if still there in couple of days to call them and they would come again for free. I thought the price I paid was very good. Certainly recommend them.

Wanted to use a local company to help me with a pigeon problem. One pesky blighter had taken to perching on the gable end of my roof and was messing down the front face of my newly painted white frontage. I had tried a pulsing machine plus even tried a home made scarecrow but to no avail. I contacted one company who professed to be local. They were going to charge £120 just to come out and survey the work. That seemed ridiculous when I had researched exactly what was needed. I was eventually referred to GC who responded immediately. They asked me to send pictures of the house frontage so that they could quote. Within days I was booked in to have an anti-perch device fitted. Graham, the company owner was fantastic, the work was completed in a totally professional way and the pigeon problem is now eradicated. GC are definitely local and are Wigston based. Other companies who claim to be local are part of a national franchise - be careful they will rip you off. I highly recommend GC for any pigeon problems - they cannot be faulted.Martin PantlingAylestone

Graham and the team were reliable, helpful and very knowledgeable. Squirrels were in a very difficult location to reach, and thankfully made their own way out! But Graham made sure the hole was fixed once we confirmed they had left. Would use again 100%.

Fantastic job! I was extremely pleased with Graham (Owner of GC Pest Control). He was professional, knowledgeable and came across as genuine. He puts the customer first and sets customers expectations well. We had a squirrel infestation issue and within 3 visits he managed to catch them all and block off the area which they were tunnelling through. I would definitely recommend Graham and GC Pest Control. 5 Stars
