The Problem with Grey Squirrels

Invasive, destructive, displacement of our native red squirrels

Grey squirrels are not native to the UK — they were introduced from North America in the 19th century and have since displaced the native red squirrel population almost entirely.

They’re listed by the IUCN as one of the 100 worst invasive non-native species globally, and with an estimated 2.7 million grey squirrels in the UK, infestations are increasingly common in urban areas like Leicester.

What Grey Squirrels Do Inside Your Home

Once squirrels get into lofts or roof spaces, they can cause serious damage:

  • Chewing through electrical cables (fire hazard)
  • Gnawing on pipes and roofing timbers
  • Tearing up loft insulation to build their dray (nest)
  • Scratching and chewing through plasterboard into rooms
  • Causing heat loss by compacting insulation

They typically enter through:

  • Loose tiles or lead flashing
  • Gaps in facia boards or soffits
  • Ivy, creepers, or trees giving access to rooflines
  • Open vents or broken roofing materials

How We Control Squirrels in Leicester

Under UK law, grey squirrels must be humanely controlled — and cannot be released once trapped. We follow all legal guidelines under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Invasive Alien Species Order.

Step 1: Full Inspection

We assess your property to confirm squirrel activity, check for damage, and locate entry points.

Step 2: Safe & Legal Trapping

We use humane traps placed in lofts or affected areas. No rodenticides are legally approved for squirrels, so trapping is the only permitted method.

Step 3: Proofing & Repairs

After removal, our in-house team carries out essential roofline proofing:

  • Installing steel mesh or plates
  • Sealing access points
  • Trimming back vegetation near rooflines
  • Repairing damaged tiles, soffits or facias

This prevents future access and long-term infestation.

  • Under roof tiles
  • Behind facias and soffits
  • Wall cavities
  • Chimney spaces
  • Barns and garages

When Are Squirrels Most Active?

Squirrels breed twice a year (Feb–Mar and Jul–Aug) in ideal conditions. Each litter typically contains 1–4 pups, and activity levels spike when:

  • They’re preparing nests (early spring and late summer)
  • Food sources become scarce
  • Entry points are easily accessible
  • They’re disturbed or displaced from nearby areas

If left unchecked, squirrels will return season after season, causing ongoing structural damage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Do squirrels really cause damage in lofts?
Yes. They chew through timber, insulation, cables and even plasterboard. This can lead to major repairs and fire hazards if left untreated.

2. I live in Leicester –what areas do you cover?
Absolutely. We cover all Leicester postcodes including Braunstone, Stoneygate, Oadby, Knighton and the wider Leicestershire area including Rutland.

3. Is squirrel trapping legal?
Yes — trapping is the only legal method for controlling grey squirrels. It’s illegal to release them back into the wild under the Invasive Alien Species Order.

4. Do squirrels carry diseases?
They don’t directly spread disease to humans, but they do carry fleas, ticks, and mites. These can affect pets or contribute to secondary pest issues.

5. Can you stop them coming back?
Yes — our proofing service is designed to permanently seal off access points, using materials that squirrels can’t chew through.

Excellent Service. I have used them twice once in 2021 and again this week for a different area. They treated the wasp problem, were very prompt and said if still there in couple of days to call them and they would come again for free. I thought the price I paid was very good. Certainly recommend them.

Wanted to use a local company to help me with a pigeon problem. One pesky blighter had taken to perching on the gable end of my roof and was messing down the front face of my newly painted white frontage. I had tried a pulsing machine plus even tried a home made scarecrow but to no avail. I contacted one company who professed to be local. They were going to charge £120 just to come out and survey the work. That seemed ridiculous when I had researched exactly what was needed. I was eventually referred to GC who responded immediately. They asked me to send pictures of the house frontage so that they could quote. Within days I was booked in to have an anti-perch device fitted. Graham, the company owner was fantastic, the work was completed in a totally professional way and the pigeon problem is now eradicated. GC are definitely local and are Wigston based. Other companies who claim to be local are part of a national franchise - be careful they will rip you off. I highly recommend GC for any pigeon problems - they cannot be faulted.Martin PantlingAylestone

Graham and the team were reliable, helpful and very knowledgeable. Squirrels were in a very difficult location to reach, and thankfully made their own way out! But Graham made sure the hole was fixed once we confirmed they had left. Would use again 100%.
