If you’ve noticed pigeons nesting beneath your solar panels — or piles of droppings on your roof, driveway or car — you’re not alone. Across Leicester, from Highfields to Wigston, homeowners are seeing increased bird activity caused by solar panels.

At GC Pest Control, we offer a complete solar panel proofing service, protecting your system from birds, improving efficiency, and restoring peace and quiet — all backed by a 10-year guarantee.

Why Birds Nest Under Solar Panels

Pigeons see solar panels as:

  • A warm, sheltered place to nest
  • Protection from predators
  • A perfect space to breed in peace
  • Easy access from nearby roofs, trees or aerials

Without proper proofing, they’ll return year after year — nesting, fouling, and causing long-term damage.

The Real Problems Caused by Nesting Birds

Noise and Disruption

  • Constant cooing, scratching, flapping and movement
  • Most noticeable in early morning and late evening
  • Particularly disruptive near loft bedrooms
  • Ongoing stress and frustration for homeowners

Unsightly Mess and Smell

  • Large amounts of fouling, nesting material and debris
  • Bird droppings on your car, windows, drive or garden
  • Acidic droppings can corrode panels and tiles
  • Fouling also blocks gutters, risking overflow and damp

Health Risks

  • Pigeons carry mites, ticks and pathogens
  • Droppings can contain fungal spores and bacteria
  • Risk of secondary infestation and allergic reaction
  • Airborne particles from dried droppings can affect indoor air quality

Reduced Solar Panel Efficiency

  • Fouling blocks sunlight, reducing power generation
  • Dirt build-up can lead to long-term corrosion
  • Damaged wiring from birds pecking or nesting in contact points
  • Shading from nests and debris disrupts solar performance

Bird netting, spikes, wire systems,

Nesting ferral pigeons or ferral pigeons using an area to feed or perch can cause major problems for businesses and domestic residents. The mess they make with nesting materials and their guano can be a very unsightly sight and also a huge health risk.

Pigeon droppings/guano can pose health risks as it has the potential to be carrying bacteria and fungi that can cause diseases like psittacosis (a respiratory illness), histoplasmosis (a fungal infection), and cryptococcosis (another fungal infection) among many others. Pigeon droppings can also harbor other bacteria and parasites, posing potential risks for gastrointestinal infections and other illnesses.

There are multiple ways of preventing pigeons from nesting or perching..

Pigeon spikes

These are relatively easy to install and are mainly stuck on with an adhesive, gutter clip or screws into timber. They offer a quick removal of the perching area ie window sills, guttering, fencing, Ariel’s, dishes and pipe work. These areas are better suited to spikes as netting would be unpractical.

The downside is they can be quite ugly looking.

Bird wire systems

Bird wire systems are more discreet and are best suited to guttering, fence lines, roof ledges, roof tops and structures that the areas used by pigeons is highly visible.

The downside is they require regular maintenance as the wires are very thin and can brake easily.

Bird netting

This is by far the best way to stop pigeons from using an area for nesting or perching as it takes away their access to the area totally. Done right it requires very little maintenance and as the netting is nylon it will last a long time. It is time consuming to put up but it is worth the extra cost for a longer lasting solution.

It is best suited to the under side of car ports, canopies, multi storey car parks, shop fronts, court yards, roof tops around ac units or plant, fire escapes, terraces, balconies and many other places.

The downsides are it restricts access to certain area but this can be resolved by cutting doors and zippers in to access equipment, light fitting etc

This work is all carried out by us using ladders, scaffolding, cherry pickers etc

Clean up of the area before and after is completed by us as standard due to the above mentioned health risks and visual perception this gives.

Excellent Service. I have used them twice once in 2021 and again this week for a different area. They treated the wasp problem, were very prompt and said if still there in couple of days to call them and they would come again for free. I thought the price I paid was very good. Certainly recommend them.

Wanted to use a local company to help me with a pigeon problem. One pesky blighter had taken to perching on the gable end of my roof and was messing down the front face of my newly painted white frontage. I had tried a pulsing machine plus even tried a home made scarecrow but to no avail. I contacted one company who professed to be local. They were going to charge £120 just to come out and survey the work. That seemed ridiculous when I had researched exactly what was needed. I was eventually referred to GC who responded immediately. They asked me to send pictures of the house frontage so that they could quote. Within days I was booked in to have an anti-perch device fitted. Graham, the company owner was fantastic, the work was completed in a totally professional way and the pigeon problem is now eradicated. GC are definitely local and are Wigston based. Other companies who claim to be local are part of a national franchise - be careful they will rip you off. I highly recommend GC for any pigeon problems - they cannot be faulted.Martin PantlingAylestone

Graham and the team were reliable, helpful and very knowledgeable. Squirrels were in a very difficult location to reach, and thankfully made their own way out! But Graham made sure the hole was fixed once we confirmed they had left. Would use again 100%.

Fantastic job! I was extremely pleased with Graham (Owner of GC Pest Control). He was professional, knowledgeable and came across as genuine. He puts the customer first and sets customers expectations well. We had a squirrel infestation issue and within 3 visits he managed to catch them all and block off the area which they were tunnelling through. I would definitely recommend Graham and GC Pest Control. 5 Stars
