Rats are a serious problem across Leicester — from homes in Aylestone and Highfields, to businesses in Oadby, Blaby, and the city centre. Whether you’ve seen one in your loft, garden, or even heard scratching behind the walls, we’re here to help.
At GC Pest Control, we offer a complete rat removal service covering inspection, treatment, proofing, and clean-up — all delivered in-house by qualified professionals.

Why Rat Infestations Are a Growing Problem in Leicester

Rats are found everywhere — domestic homes, gardens, bin stores, warehouses, and drainage systems. Most rats in the UK are brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) — also known as sewer rats or Norway rats — and they’re now estimated to number over 250 million, far exceeding the UK’s human population.

How Rats Get Inside Properties

  • Broken or collapsed drains (most common)
  • Holes in external walls or vents
  • Gaps under doors
  • Overgrown ivy or trees allowing access to rooflines
  • Cat flaps, open doors, storm downpipes
  • Unsealed pipe or cable entry points

Inside, they often nest in lofts, wall cavities, or under floorboards. Outside, they burrow under decking, sheds, and garden walls — particularly where food waste is present.

The Risks Posed by Rats

Health Dangers

Rats carry a wide range of diseases including:

  • Leptospirosis (Weil’s Disease)
  • Salmonella
  • Hantavirus
  • Rat Bite Fever

These can be transmitted through droppings, urine, and contaminated surfaces, especially in kitchens or food storage areas.

Damage to Property

  • Chewing wires, leading to fire risk
  • Damaging pipes and insulation
  • Nesting in stockrooms, lofts or behind walls
  • Contaminating food in storage or retail businesses

The Challenge – Why Rats Are Hard to Control

Rats are highly intelligent, cautious creatures who suffer from neophobia (fear of new objects), making them tricky to trap. They are also:

  • Excellent problem solvers
  • Mainly nocturnal(but will feed during the day if hungry)
  • Extremely fast breeders — a female can produce 6–12 pups every 3 weeks and be pregnant again within hours of giving birth.

Without early intervention, a small issue can turn into a major infestation very quickly.

Our Leicester Rat Control Process

We handle the full process — from the first call to the final clean-up — so you’re not passed between companies.

Step 1: Initial Inspection

We’ll identify entry points, signs of infestation, and assess the scale of the problem both inside and outside.

Step 2: Targeted Trapping or Treatment
We prioritise trapping over poisons. Traps are:

  • Safer for the environment, pets, and wildlife
  • Better for monitoring (we can identify sex, size, and number)
  • Less risk of odour or fly infestations from dead rats
  • Contaminating food in storage or retail businesses

Where poison is necessary, we follow strict CRRU AND NPTA guidelines.

Step 3: Proofing & Repairs

If rats are entering through:

  • Broken drains → we can carry out or arrange a CCTV drain survey
  • Wall gaps or rooflines → our proofing team seals them off with mesh, plates, or repairs

We also offer ongoing pest control contracts for businesses and landlords.

Step 4: Environmental Clean-Up
After the infestation is controlled, we can remove:

  • Soiled loft insulation
  • Droppings
  • Nesting material
  • Dead rats We sanitise the affected areas, preventing lingering smells or bacterial risks.

Where Rats Hide in Leicester Homes & Businesses

Common indoor spots:

  • Lofts
  • Behind kitchen units
  • Under floorboards
  • Wall cavities
  • Boiler cupboards
  • Under or behind appliances

Outdoor areas:

  • Bin stores
  • Under decking or sheds
  • Drains
  • Garden walls or burrows
  • Overgrown gardens
  • Compost heaps or food waste bins

If you live in Knighton, Clarendon Park, or Evington, older Victorian properties often have issues with redundant or damaged drainage systems — a frequent entry route for rats.

  • Warehouses and distribution hubs
  • Shops and food retailers
  • Schools, care homes, and offices
  • Housing associations, local councils and sports facilities

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How do I know if I have rats in my home?
You might hear scratching at night, see droppings, or notice chewed packaging or wires. Rats are usually active after dark, but hungry rats will come out in the daytime too.

2. Are rats dangerous to my family or pets?
Yes — they carry diseases and can contaminate food prep areas. They also gnaw wires, increasing the risk of fire.

3. Do you remove rats across all areas in Leicester?
Yes, we cover all of Leicester and surrounding areas, including Syston, Birstall, Lutterworth, and Narborough.

4. How long does it take to get rid of rats?
It depends on the scale and location of the infestation. Most jobs take between 2-4 weeks and can require 3-5 visits, depending on the level of infestation, if drain surveys or major proofing is required this may be extended.

5. Can you repair damage and stop them coming back?
Absolutely. Our in-house proofing team can seal entry points, fix drain faults, and carry out full sanitisation after treatment.

Excellent Service. I have used them twice once in 2021 and again this week for a different area. They treated the wasp problem, were very prompt and said if still there in couple of days to call them and they would come again for free. I thought the price I paid was very good. Certainly recommend them.

Wanted to use a local company to help me with a pigeon problem. One pesky blighter had taken to perching on the gable end of my roof and was messing down the front face of my newly painted white frontage. I had tried a pulsing machine plus even tried a home made scarecrow but to no avail. I contacted one company who professed to be local. They were going to charge £120 just to come out and survey the work. That seemed ridiculous when I had researched exactly what was needed. I was eventually referred to GC who responded immediately. They asked me to send pictures of the house frontage so that they could quote. Within days I was booked in to have an anti-perch device fitted. Graham, the company owner was fantastic, the work was completed in a totally professional way and the pigeon problem is now eradicated. GC are definitely local and are Wigston based. Other companies who claim to be local are part of a national franchise - be careful they will rip you off. I highly recommend GC for any pigeon problems - they cannot be faulted.Martin PantlingAylestone

Graham and the team were reliable, helpful and very knowledgeable. Squirrels were in a very difficult location to reach, and thankfully made their own way out! But Graham made sure the hole was fixed once we confirmed they had left. Would use again 100%.

Fantastic job! I was extremely pleased with Graham (Owner of GC Pest Control). He was professional, knowledgeable and came across as genuine. He puts the customer first and sets customers expectations well. We had a squirrel infestation issue and within 3 visits he managed to catch them all and block off the area which they were tunnelling through. I would definitely recommend Graham and GC Pest Control. 5 Stars
